This is the cake Martha Washington made, or had made for the Twelfth Night celebration at Mount Vernon, which also celebrated their wedding anniversary, January 6, 1759 in Williamsburg, VA. It’s a light fruitcake. Not being a huge fan of candied fruit, I used chopped dried fruit (apricots, cranberries, golden raisins, cherries and blueberries) ~ both versions were welcomed. I’ve done it with a Swiss Buttercream, icing but a sprinkle of powdered sugar worked nicely as well. At the time I made them I had yet to start blogging so I have no pictures of the preparation; perhaps I’ll do that this year. In the meantime I wanted to include the recipe in celebration of Maria’s book.
